Cleaning part n

Today was another good day. I finally figured out how the distibution belts can be mounted when off the engine. The timing is important, says another Alfa petrol head Bert.
While working in my garage, my two main followers were anticipating on when the engine is ready and driving is the thing to do.

The engine is clean on the top, now the frontside and then changing the belts and spanners.

Happily I bougt a set of special tools in Nijmegen some years ago. I got the workshop manual with it, a gift a appreciate more every day, these days.

The belts and spanners are gone. It seems to be a 98 notches belt for a 8 valve 1700 cc engine.

Dirty. Left of the camsheft end, the place where my 1.3S engine had a whole.
On the right side, a fraction of the water pump.

Bits and pieces that came off by dismounting the belts and spanners. For removing the central bolt I had to block the flywheel ont the backside, for that I removed the gearbox. Good time to check on the state of the clutch.

Gearbox removal went easy

The special Alfa tool to fix the flywheel.

Tomorrow will be another good day, I know it. Respraying the distribution caps, ordering the belts and sapnners, checking the clutch and the water pump. Maybe these parts will be on my ordering list too.
Totals will amount some € 200 euro's I figure.

Carburettor

Well the job's done, the carburettors are clean as a whistle. The package I ordered by Di Michele is empty. Almost. Two tiny rings left over. But then again the package wasn't really compatible for the 68/69 weber 40 IDF. The gaskets didn't fit , they were to small for closing the cap over the main body of the carb. I had to cut 1 mm off on the inside.
While working my way through the petrol powerstations of my beloved Alfa, I smoothed the inside of the carburettocap. Some raw and fine grinding and the opening to the venturi had nog sudden drops in the wall.

repair kit came by mail from Germany

Working around on the kitchen table, cleaning, grinding, blowing and fitting.
The dentist tool I once got form a nice 'tandartsassistente' was very handy.

The other carb was easier.

grinding the inner opening of the carb cap

My works around the engine are expanding. My plan was to clean the carbs, later the distribution was added to the list, now the clutch is added too. Some sensible repairs now the engine lies in my garage.

And after work, relaxation is needed. Here Pip is watching my swing on the golf course. She's got a pritty good swing herself  too.
